You only have to look at the clientele at La Mexicana to know it is a locals’ favorite. Whether eating at the counter or taking away (my preference), La Mex offers a delicious assortment of Mexican food prepared with tradition and signature south of the border flavors.
La Mex has many of my favorites, starting with the Machaca Chimichanga. Shredded beef in a flour tortilla then deep-fried is pretty much as good as it gets for me. Served with rice and beans and guacamole, this dish will fill you up for the day. The crispiness of the fried tortilla provides a nice contrast to the ample beef inside. For those not fans of the fried, the Wet Burrito is another tasty option. This regular burrito with salsa and melted jack cheese can be served with either red (mild) or green (caliente) sauce. Either way, it’s great. There are many other burrito options with fillings ranging from chicken to pork to carne asada (steak on the grill), as well as chorizo and the popular veggie.
Fajitas are another A-plus on the La Mex menu with beef or chicken strips and vegetables all stir fried and served with rice, beans, guacamole and tortillas. For the do-it-yourselfers, this is the ticket. I must say that the flour tortillas are wonderful and I always order extra because they give you so much, three tortillas just doesn’t seem to do it. My preference is the Chicken Fajitas, which often work as two meals due to the generous portion.
For the veggie fan, I recommend the Cheese Enchiladas. Topped with red or green sauce and served with rice and beans, even carnivores like me are clamoring for this dish. The Chili Relleno is another veggie option with two chile rellenos bathed in sauce and melted cheese. Absolutely delicious.
For the taco lover, they have a variety featuring hard or soft shell in addition to the deep-fried version, also with choices of meats or veggies for filler. I adore the deep-fried Machaca Tacos. Crunchy and delicious they are crisp and not greasy.
If you are a grazer and like the chips thing, La Mex excels with the Chips and Guacamole. Kick it up a notch for Nachos with Cheese or go big with Super Nachos (choice of meat, beans, tomatoes, onions, cilantro, cheese, guacamole and sour cream). They also have a veggie version. This is a great take home snack for watching a game on TV while you munch away in delight.
