Old Greenwood ·
Nestled among 600 acres of towering pines and surrounded by beautiful mountain vistas lies Old Greenwood, 18 holes of perfection courtesy of Jack Nicklaus. Old Greenwood has been recognized as one of the top 30 Best Courses in California by Golf Digest.
The course has four tee boxes from which to play. Unless you are a long hitter or a scratch golfer, I would recommend staying away from the four tree markers that make the course play a little more than 7,500 yards. Even with the elevation change, it will likely still be too long for the majority of golfers. Also, there are more than 90 bunkers on this course, some of which will likely be in play for scratch golfers, so prepare to practice your sand game.
The par 5, 2nd hole is the toughest hole based on handicap. It measures 631 yards from the tips and requires both length and precision. Long hitters can take a good swing at it off the tee hoping to get at least 250 yards on their drive to have any chance at par. The second shot requires more precision, but also length. However, on this dogleg right hole, the real danger occurs around the green, which makes getting even a bogey a relief.
Playing uphill toward the clubhouse and measuring 416 yards, the 18th is amazing. Although the fairway is wide, you’ll need a good drive to clear the enormous trap on the right. Make sure to take enough club on your second shot, which has you hitting into a well-guarded green that will likely still sit considerably above where you are standing. The putting surface is fairly small by Old Greenwood standards and every bit as difficult to hit, with three bunkers fronting and one in the rear.
The practice facilities are top notch with a natural grass driving range that has hole locations at varying distances. It also has a separate chipping and putting greens that are well maintained and provide an excellent warm-up before your round.
The beautiful outdoor setting at the Terrace Grill offers the perfect view of the finishing hole framed by the mountains and ski runs of Northstar. The Grill provides breakfasts items and casual lunch fare, as well as a selection of beer and cocktails.
