Tahoe City Golf Course was established in 1917 and was designed by May “Queenie” Dunn Hupfel, where she served as pro and manager. As a favorite pastime of the wealthy, golf came into its own in the early years of the 20th Century, as did the Tahoe Tavern. A railroad spur line brought guests of the Tahoe Tavern to Tahoe City, thus a portion of the Tavern’s extensive holdings was set aside for a golf course.
First built as a six-holer with sand greens, the Tavern links became nine holes and 2,700 yards in 1926. Through several sales of the Tahoe Tavern, its outlying and separately deeded parcels were divvied up among the partners. Thus, the golf course became the property of Gordon and Pat Hyde. The large partnership in which they were involved sold to Carl Bechdolt Jr. and his wife Elsie in 1948. Tahoe City Golf Course was host to big money games in the 1950s, including Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, the Mills Brothers, Ken Venturi, Harvey Ward, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Andy Williams. It is now owned by the Tahoe City Public Utility District and run by Duncan Golf Management.
The toughest hole based on handicap of the course is the par 4, 3rd hole, measuring 425 yards. Do not leave your second shot to the right of the green, as it is nearly impossible to get up and down. The hole is bordered by the first hole on the right and a parking lot on the left. Short hitters or high handicappers would be wise to lay up short of the well-guarded green.
The par 4, 5th hole, measuring 310 yards is a great hole. To play it conservatively, lay up left of the water with a mid to short iron. Play your second shot for the center of the green – don’t aim at the pin. If you are hitting it straight and want to gamble, take a driver or 3-wood and try to cut the ball around the trees. Out of bounds is on the left and right, so there is not much room for error. If you pull it off, you may find yourself putting on this treacherous green for eagle.
Tahoe City Golf Course has a chipping area and putting green. The clubhouse offers a pro shop and restaurant. The TCPUD also installed a new bocce court this summer.
